Obstetric anaesthesia provides much to cheer about, the pain relief provided by an epidural, the safe delivery of a baby by Caesarean section. However it also provides for some of the scariest moments of an anaethetic career: the “Crash” section, the near-death postpartum haemorrhage, the risk of patient awareness (as detailed in NAP5).
The course is aimed at trainees in the early stages of training in obstetric anaesthesia. Those trainees who have no experience of obstetric anaesthesia may find it beneficial to attend at least one obstetric session in their base hospital before coming to the OATS course. Trainees who have recently obtained their obstetric competencies have also found the course helpful.
Using the human patient simulator in combination with other simulator modalities, the course offers participants hands on experience of managing relevant scenarios. This course has been developed and is delivered by a faculty of experienced Obstetric Anaesthetists from across Scotland.
